Mustafa Koç, Ph.D.
Education & Research Interests
Mustafa Koç is a professor at the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. He received his BA at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, MA at the University of Waterloo and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. His research and teaching interests involve food studies, food security, food policy, globalization and sociology of migration. He has also been involved in various national and global debates on globalization, food security, and peace. Professor Koç is also a frequent commentator on social change and politics in Turkey.

Mustafa was among the founders of the Centre for Studies in Food Security, Food Secure Canada, and the Canadian Association for Food Studies. He has also been involved in various national and global debates on globalization, social change and development, food security, and peace.
He has various publications on sociology of agriculture and food, social change and development, and immigration, including For Hunger-proof Cities (1999), Working Together (2001), Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Food Studies (2008), Küresel Gıda Düzeni: Kriz DerinleÅŸirken and Critical Perspectives in Food Studies (2017). Mustafa has been the recipient of the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement award, Canadian Association for Food Studies, 2017; Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, Volunteer Service Award, 2017; Canadian Association for Food Studies, Ryerson Faculty Association’s Career Achievement Award, Ryerson University, 2016 and the Provost’s Interdisciplinary Teaching Award, Ryerson University, 2014.
